RHG9728 High-Density Modular Connectivity for Precision Substation Backbones

As the global transition to smart energy grids accelerates in 2026, ATOP continues to lead the way in robust communication infrastructure. The RHG9728 series are flagship high-density, rack-mounted managed switches designed to meet the demanding bandwidth and reliability requirements of modern power substation backbones. Built in compliance with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613, they ensure stable operation in harsh environments, including strong electromagnetic interference and extreme temperatures from -40°C to +85°C.

Combining robust system design with high-speed performance, the RHG9728 further delivers massive switching capacity and nanosecond-level timing precision, enabling reliable and efficient data transmission across critical infrastructure networks.

Flexible, High-Availability Design

Designed for maximum uptime, the series utilizes a fully hot-swappable modular format. In a power substation network, the Backbone Switch acts as the central highway for all data traffic. The RHG9728 is specifically designed for this role, equipped with four 10-Gigabit SFP uplink slots and a massive 128Gbps switching capacity to aggregate data from various access-level devices.

Because the backbone switch is the "heart" of the network, any downtime can lead to a total communication failure across the entire facility. This is why Hot-Swap functionality is critical. The RHG9728 features hot-swappable modular power and I/O boards, which offer two vital advantages:
  • Non-disruptive maintenance: Technicians can replace or upgrade I/O modules and power supplies without system shutdown, ensuring uninterrupted substation operations, which is an essential capability for 24/7 utility services.
  • Mission-critical reliability: With two power module slots, the switch supports full redundancy. If one power source fails, it can be swapped out while the second continues to power the backbone.

Unmatched Performance and Precision

Beyond its ruggedness and modularity, the RHG9728 is a leader in time synchronization, offering nanosecond-level accuracy recognized for its award-winning performance. It features integrated IEEE 1588v2 hardware-based Boundary Clock (BC) and Transparent Clock (TC), as well as Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) support. In large-scale networks, the switch acts as a Boundary Clock to prevent Grandmaster clock overload, maintaining a maximum end-to-end time deviation of only 1.5 µs from the GNSS source to the application across up to 10 BC hierarchies. Even in holdover mode, the RHG9728 delivers high accuracy with a deviation of less than 30 ns/s, fully complying with strict IEEE 61850-9-3 requirements.
